The Kululeka Experience

“The Wild Coast? The Drakensberg? Never heard of it.”
“I wouldn’t know how to get there.”

These are the kinds of responses we’ve heard time and again from international visitors to South Africa. And every time, our answer is the same:
“You’re missing the best part.”

That’s why we created Kululeka Travel — to open the door to South Africa’s wild, untouched places that most tourists never get to see. While Cape Town, the Garden Route, and Kruger National Park are undeniably beautiful, they’re just the beginning.

We specialize in the places that are harder to reach, less talked about, and absolutely unforgettable. Places like the rugged cliffs of the Wild Coast, the misty peaks of the Drakensberg, and the quiet, soul-stirring corners of the country that locals treasure.

We’ve spent our lives exploring these regions, building relationships with the communities who call them home, and uncovering the kinds of experiences that don’t show up in guidebooks. Now, we’re here to share them with you.

“Kululeka” is loosely translated from isiZulu to mean “be free.”
“Lekka” is a word you’ll hear often while traveling through South Africa — a local slang term that means great, awesome, just right. It’s the kind of word you’d use while walking along a deserted beach, or standing at the summit of the Drakensberg with no one else in sight.

Together, Kululeka Travel is about freedom and feeling lekka — those moments when you’re completely immersed in nature, your breath catches, a smile spreads across your face, and you realise you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Our itineraries are designed to take you to those places. The wild, untouched corners of South Africa where time slows down, the crowds disappear, and the experience becomes deeply personal. This is travel that reconnects you — with nature, with yourself, and with the true spirit of South Africa.

Join us on an adventure of a lifetime…

Day 1: Port Elizabeth to Outspan Safari Lodge

  • Your journey begins at Port Elizabeth Airport, where you’ll meet your group, driver, and guide. From here, we head straight into nature — no time wasted.
  • Our first stop is a peaceful nature reserve, home to roaming herds of antelope, zebra, and wildebeest. With no Big Five predators in the area, you’re free to explore the open grasslands of the Kei Cuttings on foot, surrounded by wildlife and wide skies.

MbotyiOnline Wild Coast Experience (4 nights)

A highlight of almost everyone’s stay with us: a 4 day slack-packing trip along the remotest part of South Africa. This is another place extremely close to our hearts that we have been exploring for many years. This area is called the ‘Pondoland.’

Pondoland is part of the Wild Coast, renowned for its rugged cliffs, secluded beaches, and lush estuaries. Iconic natural landmarks include Waterfall Bluff (1 of 7 waterfalls in the world plunging directly into the ocean), Cathedral Rock and Magwa Falls (second highest waterfall in SA), which will all be seen during our hike.

Pondoland is home to the AmaMpondo people, a Xhosa-speaking community with a rich history, traditional customs, and vibrant storytelling. You will experience this culture as MbotyiOnline provides us with their amazing, local guides.

Drakensburg Mountains (2 nights)

The Drakensburg mountains have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to their breathtaking scenery and cultural significance. With the highest peak standing at 3450m above sea level, the views overlooking South Africa are incredible. The Drakensberg Mountains are famous for their San rock paintings, which are among the best-preserved examples of prehistoric art in the world. Created by the San people (Bushmen) over thousands of years, these paintings provide a glimpse into their lives, beliefs, and spiritual practices.

Included activities:

  • Sunset horse ride
  • Guided hike into Cobham area of the Southern Drakensburg
  • 4×4 trip up Sani Pass to have a drink at the ‘highest pub in Africa.’

This is freedom.

Our final stop will be Johannesburg where we will say our goodbyes.

Depending on dates and availability, the trip can be done in reverse.
